How the Name came to be
I haven’t always been Third Child. I started out with a different label when I was 17, it was called Touchwood.
I had this label for 3 years when our next-door neighbours, John and Marcia Skinner, decided to sell their vineyard to retire. They had two children, and the vineyard was their Third Child. John and Marcia produced some beautiful Riesling and Pinot Noir from their property.
Not long after the Vineyard was sold, I asked John about the label and what he would like to do with it. He had a bit of time to think and discuss with Marcia. He then came back to me with an answer. John wanted to see their legacy continue, carrying on their hard work. So, we struck a deal: a handshake, three cartons of wine as payment and the Label was mine to keep!
It is such an amazing opportunity to take on their label. It’s quite a fitting name for me too… since I am the third child in my family.
Third Child is now producing ten different wines and making a respectable name in the Tasmanian wine Community. It is my dream to continue the label into the future. I would love to give my future family the opportunity to continue the story.
The old label
This was John's and Marcia's original label, which they used for 12 years. The original label came to be from their daughter, Claire. In their first vintage of 2004, John and Marcia hadn't come up with a name for their wine yet. Needing to label their wine soon, they asked Claire for some ideas. ‘Easy,’ Claire said. ‘You've got two kids already; considering the care taken and time spent at the farm, it's your third child.’
Third Child is more than a wine label. It is a story of family and community. The devotion John and Marcia gave to their label now continues with a new generation, me.
